CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Soulbound Shard

Power. Growth. Stalwart. Those concepts erased everything in my mind for a full second before I could take a breath and the world came back into focus. The caramel intrusions in the weapon flared with energy before settling to mute pulsing glows along with the heartbeats of mana I sensed. It wasn’t as frequent as my own, but they were in time with the pumping of my Slurry Ichor. It was as if the energy in my veins was also the energy within the axe hammer.

Hand still firmly planted on the haft, I focused on it so its information would show again.Things had changed just from that brief interaction.

<Quotient 4 Asymmetrical Field Anvil (Axe Hammer)>

<Attribute: Mobility>

<Trait: Ballast (Q4)>

<Shard Trait: Arcane Sink (Q6)>

<Soulbound: Ronan Terrigan>

Not that I know what the Arcane Sink trait does, or even Ballast for that matter, but now the weapon is Soulbound?

“Huh, I can’t see the description anymore,” Arnold said, snapping me out of my staring contest with the weapon.

“Really?” I said, turning to the others. I turned just fast enough to watch their eyes widen. “What is it? What now?”

“Ronan, isn’t that… a tad heavy?” Rommel asked, pointing at my side.

Confused, I turned to follow his finger and saw that the axe hammer was held firmly in my hand. The weight was so inconsequential and the grip so comfortable I’d hardly noticed it had come along when I turned around.

“Woah,” I replied eloquently.

“What happened!?” Arnold asked, hands gesturing wildly. “Speak words, man!”

“Uhh, it says the weapon is ‘soulbound’ to me now? And that Arcane Sink that was blank is now Q6.”

“Hmmm. Too much for coincidence,” Rommel said, as if that explained his entire train of thought.

“Not you too. Come on, Rommel! I can’t deal with another of you going braindead on me,” Arnold complained. “Are we all going to blow up? Did we succeed? Blast! Can I get a straight answer?”

The dwarf was a tad agitated, his entire face turning a slight red as he glared at both of us. I was still somewhat in shock at the development, while Rommel seemed to be in deep contemplation of something. Not the most conducive environment for the cantankerous man.

“I don’t know what happened, Arnold,” I said, making a placating gesture with my free hand. “The description changed, I felt energy flow through me, and then bam!”

The dwarf fiddled with his beard angrily, grumbling all the while. He was glaring both at me and at the weapon. Before I could try to say something else to Arnold, Rommel rejoined the conversation. “Are either of you familiar with this Ballast trait?”

“That’s a no from me,” I answered, focusing on the easy topic of conversation. “Haven’t messed around too much with air infusions other than the spider naginata.”

“Hmmm, me neither,” Arnold rumbled. “Air doesn’t tend to like the worked metal.”

“Anyone that might know?”

“Devon,” both Rommel and Arnold answered at the same time. They shared a look, but the dwarf let Rommel speak. “Ever since the cannon, he’s been interested in making multipurpose cannonballs based around the attunements.
